Cloud PACS Usability Study Shines Light on Issues
Every hospital wants to reduce the return rate of patients. They also want to shorten the patient’s stay in the hospital, turning them out healthier than when they arrived. Can cloud PACS possibly be part of the solution? Increasingly, it appears cloud PACS can achieve just that.
According to a study by King Saud University in Saudi Arabia, they found that PACS can be part of the solution for shortening the stay of patients at hospitals. This doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges that need to be met where PACS are concerned, but cloud PACS vendors are now stepping up to fill in the gaps.
According to the study, PACS are used widely in Saudi Arabia and there are plans to implement PACS solutions across another nearly 300 hospitals. In America, cloud PACS are also coming into wider use with facilities claiming a number of improvements, including patient care.
How does this happen? Aren’t hospitals already equipped with the best technology? The simple answer is, “no.” There are still a number of hospitals using compact disc burning technology to store and share medical image data. In this age of wireless technology, some facilities continue to waste valuable space in their hospitals for CD storage. However, the storage issue is likely the least burdensome aspect of this issue.
More important is the fact that so many exams are lost or stolen when they are shared via CD. They are also damaged, making them unreadable, or they were never burned correctly in the first place. In some cases, this means the exam has to be done again, which is costly, time consuming, and does nothing to improve the patient care levels that most facilities place as their number one priority.
Rather than waste time, money and risk HIPPA violations, healthcare providers are looking to cloud PACS to archive and share their medical images. It’s a process that takes all the technology management and updating out of the hands of the provider’s IT staff and into the hands of the professional cloud vendor.
Instead of waiting for the exam to be burned onto a CD, the images are available immediately through a secure URL. This is the type of solution being offered by OffSite Image Management, Inc., through a process called Virtual CD. We are assisting clients in moving far away from the cumbersome and inefficient CD burning technology and into a realm of total accessibility.
