Medical Imaging Advancement in Teleradiology
Cloud-based medical image management is no longer a niche industry, thanks in part to teleradiology. Medical imaging specialists in teleradiology are eagerly taking to web-based viewers to send their images out to other teleradiologists. The benefits are many, but most will cite the fact that with a web-based solution, there are no downloads to hassle with, nor are there in-house updates of systems that have historically caused downtime and increased workload on the medical IT staff.
Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of new solutions in teleradiology today is the fact that mobile medical imaging is now assisting in providing a means for better patient care. However, sharing and viewing images via the cloud hasn’t been without its challenges. Latency, which generally isn’t an issue when an image is being accessed from a nearby server, can be a problem for teleradiologists who are used to seeing images at a rate of around 50 frames per second. For images that are accessed across the country, the rate might be as low as 10 frames per second.
One approach to this issue is to leverage client-side rendering, use advanced protocols for streaming images, offering a faster frame rate and a high-quality image. Utilizing JavaScript and creating new medical image exchange platforms is one way around the latency issue.
While technology is improving to assist teleradiologists, there remains a number of them who feel like they are sending out their exams with no real assurance that it will make it to its intended place. It’s complicated because teleradiology itself is a complex field. However, accountability isn’t impossible.
Data coming from multiple facilities is a headache for most teleradiologists due to the fact there are few logical rules used in managing received data. Daily work lists are often only accessible at the office or workstation, which means there is no mobility for teleradiologists, most of whom feel sequestered away in their work confines.
Managing data, even various forms of medical image files, is not as tough as it once was for teleradiologists and their partners thanks to a solution called TeleRad360.
TeleRad360 is designed by OffSite Image Management, Inc., and it offers a comprehensive solution for teleradiologists who have for too long had trouble managing workflow, gaining access to exams, and felt confident that the exams they send are actually getting to the right people.
Partnering with IMSI Med, OffSite’s solution includes a cloud PACS, browser agnostic viewer so images can be viewed anywhere from any device. Integrated RIS and radiologist work list management are also included in this solution. To make files easier to manage and query, we’ve included voice recognition. And for solid image management solutions, we’ve included report distribution.
