Get a Better Grip on Archiving Structured Data
What’s driving up the use of structured data? Some point to increased warehouse production and the sheer size of
them. Others say the increased use of legacy systems is helping to drive up structured data use. Managing and archiving structured data deserves a new look if providers are going to get better access to data while using their mainstream applications.
“Magic Quadrant for Structured Data Archiving,” a report from Gartner, outlines how enterprises are relating to data migration and archiving challenges. The report finds that around 20 percent of all information governance projects will be related to migration. Most providers can agree that the amount of structured data they are currently processing is a major issue. From archiving structured data, to processing and sharing it, providers are seeking relief. The question is, “how can the process be completed with better efficieny?”
The fact is, enterprises are being forced to keep more and more information, whether it’s HL7 or medical imaging data. The report finds that by next year, big data analytics will be incorporated into 75 percent of structured data archiving applications. Providers don’t want to run up their costs for storing data – they want to rid themselves of data that has outlived its usefulness. Furthermore, providers don’t want to pay for data storage they are not using, which is often the case with many vendors offering different levels of offsite data storage.
Providers want the ability to protect their data, migrate it without hassles, and be able to index it in a way that is easily queried. Furthermore, particularly in medical imaging, providers need the ability to share imaging across PACS without getting blocked due to proprietary architecture.
Gartner believes the data archiving market is worth around $270 million (2014), but that it is growing at around a rate of 10 percent per year. Archiving structured data contained in applications, particularly legacy applications, which may or may not have a lack of controls that protect sensitive information. This is a target for auditors who know what they’re looking for, but a bigger concern is the integrity of that data and its availability, which is of great importance to healthcare providers who rely on the imaging for any number of patient needs.
