A recent study further confirms what many experienced radiologists already suspected: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) technology provides the most accurate tumor size measurements and provides the highest correlation with histological tumor sizes.
According to the study, researchers concluded that “DBT provides the most accurate tumor size measurements among mammographic imaging techniques, and if mammography will be used in tumor size measurements, DBT should be preferred.”
Patients with dense breast tissues who are at risk for breast cancer going undetected also benefit through DBT usage. The advantage is in the way DBT works: traditional X-ray technology is used to capture images, but at different angles and depths. Not only does this help spot trouble areas in people with dense breasts, it also reduces the number of false positives.
A Growing Need for Better Technology
In the U.S., almost 30% of new cancers are in the breast. To accurately treat these cancers, it’s important for doctors to know the size of the tumor(s). Given that DBT is the most accurate in measuring the size of tumors, DBT technology has become a go-to source for improving patient care through more accurate diagnoses.
Viewing and processing mammography exams can be the stumbling block for many providers. Becoming equipped with the right management tools can be the way to overcome these challenges. With the right vendor to partner with, you can gain access to advanced processing features, such as:
- Reference lines between MLO and CC images
- Mammography CAD support of virtually any vendor
- Tomosynthesis cine plus MIP creation
- Reference lines between MG and US
There are also advanced management tools provided by the best vendors of DBT technology, including the following:
- Implant blocker
- Hanging protocols
- CAD
- Semantic interoperability
- Measurements and annotations
Using a software-as-a-service model, you can enjoy all the latest technologies, yet not have to hassle with the upkeep, updates and general maintenance issues that are inherent to on-site technology.
