Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) screening is proven to help healthcare professionals detect cancer more accurately as it comes back with fewer false positives than 2D mammography. The challenge for facilities using DBT comes with managing large file sizes and viewing them remotely.
While the typical DBT file is around 450 megabytes, they can go as high as three gigabytes. Given the number of exams a typical radiology department will do over any length of time, the data can build up significantly. Plus, DBT exams will include between 10 and 100 images of each breast. Your PACS must be capable of handling DBT files in addition to your other radiology files.
Cloud-Based Mammograms
As society has become ultra-mobile, the same should be expected of the viewing experience for radiologists and technicians. Vendors with cloud-based viewing solutions for tomosynthesis images offer tools that provide this mobile viewing experience and the ability to more effectively serve their patients.
When deciding on a solution, here are some key capabilities to look for:
- Advanced DICOM routing rules
- Unlimited DICOM connections
- Pre-caching of prior exams
- Third-party integrations
- Automatic exam aging
- Transfer syntax management
When you research vendors, make sure they’re offering you what you need to make a difference in the way you address workflow. For example, do they offer a multi-modality viewer with US, MRI, CT, CR and Nuc Med capabilities? Is horizontal and oblique masking in the toolbox? And how about one-touch initialization? You should have automatic initialization of all preferred settings and conditions. It’s also important to look for a vendor that has a solution that can adapt to meeting the unique needs of your facility.
At OffSite Image Management, that’s what we provide. We give our customers the ability to view all common image processing functions and advanced processing features, such as tomosynthesis cine plus MIP creation and Mammography CAD support of virtually any vendor.
