Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is being praised for its ability to detect cancer with greater accuracy than what other technologies can offer, and it’s also turning up fewer false positives. New research suggests DBT is far more effective in catching cancer than digital mammography (DM) alone.

Research has already shown that DBT is more accurate than DB, but until this recent study, it wasn’t known how effective DBT is in the long term. Because DBT is fairly new, we’re just now getting results of how it is impacting patients over a longer period of time.

A study, which was carried out by the Department of Radiology at Perelman School of Medicine, looked at more than 50,000 DBT exams and 10,500 DM exams. Five-year outcomes were closely studied, and findings compared. Cancer detection rates were six per 1,000 with the DBT technology, compared to 5.1 with DM alone.

Improved Tech

While DM was a welcomed technology when it hit the radiology scene, it lacks in the fact that it can’t see past obscuring breast tissue, which means normal and abnormal findings aren’t easy to come by. Not only are cancers present going unseen, there are also false positives occurring.

The healthcare community is widely recommending the use of DBT screening now. With more than 12% of women in the United States developing breast cancer over the course of their lifetime, improving detection is on the minds of many, including leading radiology technology providers like OffSite Image Management.

At OffSite, we’ve developed MAMMO Viewing technology, which is our solution for viewing and processing mammography and DBT. Our approach allows our clients to gain independence and reliability.

Our exam management tools including the following:

  • Advanced DICOM routing rules
  • Unlimited DICOM connections
  • Pre-caching of prior exams
  • Third-party integrations
  • Automatic exam aging
  • Transfer syntax management

Our semantic interoperability tools allow for optimal on-screen hanging, which includes automatically flipping Hologic tomo and MG studies. Our implant blocker makes it easier for the eye to adapt quickly to the luminance of the breast tissue. Measurement and annotations tools provide distance ROI (polygonal, circle, line or whole breast), plus histogram HU for CT. Also, our technology provides referencing between MLO and CC, as well as reference lines between MG and US.

If you’re looking for third party integrations, automatic exam aging and transfer syntax management, we’re the vendor to contact. In fact, we are focused on serving critical care and rural hospitals and clinics, as well as specialty facilities where budgets are limited. And just because we can save you money doesn’t mean our radiology tools aren’t industry-leading. Contact us and find out more about our many services.
